Ray and Charles Eames are arguably one of the most famous chair designers to date. Reading a book about them I encountered this quote “Take your pleasure seriously”. This is something I would like to remember. Pleasure is often considered frivolous but I think in a society where we are often judged based on our productivity focusing on pleasure might be a radical act of self acceptance. I think it might be even more true for women, who are socialized to care for others often at the expense of own pleasure. I am in a cycle of realizing that pleasure is important and forgetting about it again only to relearn it again later.
I got a chair tattoo above my elbow partly as a reminder about the seriousness of pleasure. Partly due to my general love of chairs and art. The tattoo I got, is of a chair that I would never want to have at home. And there is something humorous about it to me.

What is your relationship with pleasure?
